Life for many of us has several distinct periods. We change imperceptibly from childhood to old age without losing the spark that makes us individual. In this series, The Decades, I attempt to depict the primary phases that are visible in the first eight blocks of ten years. The seven protagonists in the paintings grow from childhood play to more formative and lasting outlooks. Age changes their values and feelings. In a journey through eight paintings they arrive at the eldest's 80th birthday party much fuller and rounder characters than when they set out in The Age of Innocence. The journey is a story and is one which happens to all of us who are fortunate to live long enough.
