Close-up of a rooster on a reddish background. A rooster, also known as a cockerel, or a cock is a male chicken. The female is called a hen. Young male chickens of less than one years age are called a cockerels. The oldest term is "cock," from Old English coc. The term "rooster" started in the United States. More used in the United Kingdom and Ireland is the term "cockerel". In North America, Australia and New Zealand "rooster" is almost always used. The rooster is polygamous, but can't guard several nests of eggs at once. The Rooster guards the general area where his hens are nesting, and will attack other roosters who enter his territory area. During the daytime, he often sits on a high perch, usually 4' to 5' off the ground to serve as a lookout for his flock. He will sound a distinctive alarm call if predators the crowing sound is often spelled in English as "cock-a-doodle-doo".
