These paintings were done in a 16th century oil glaze technique. The primary focus is on the underdrawing being shown through layer upon layer of transparent color for a jewel-like effect. "You don't look at an emerald, you look through it" is the basic concept. The school of thought at the time taught that all color is transparent. It it light that is opaque.
